NINA
Occupation: Executive assistant
How would you describe your personal style?
I make a lot of clothes, so I tend to wear whatever thing I’ve decided to make. So, if I’m inspired by something I see on the street, or something I see in a magazine, I just try my hand at making it. And then, it’s all about experimenting and wearing it and trying to get it to work with other things.
How did you get into making clothes?
It’s more of a hobby than anything else, but I’ve been doing it since I was about twelve. I’ve debated on a few occasions about actually selling my things, because every now and then, somebody’s like, “Wow, that’s a really great top!” or “That’s a great shirt! Where did you buy it?” And I have to tell them that I made it.
Are you wearing anything now that you made?
The black top. Everything else, I bought.
Is there something you’re wearing that you especially like?
These shoes. I love these shoes. They’re one of those items that I keep catching people staring at all the time. They sort of look like spats. It was the first pair of heels I had bought in a number of years.
What can you tell me about your hat?
I quite like wearing hats. My hair had just gotten to a length where it actually looked quite good if I wore a hat. I got this at H&M.
How about your sunglasses?
I have this thing against sunglasses that show your eyebrows. I think it looks really awful, so that’s the first thing I look for, is if they’re going to cover up my eyebrows. Not that I don’t like my eyebrows. There’s nothing wrong with them. I just think it looks really weird, because then you’ve got two sets of lines surrounding your eyes. The lenses have a slight purple tinge to them. Being my favourite colour, that also drew me to them.
What are your interests?
Travel has been a big thing for me for a number of years. I went and lived in the U.K. for a couple of years, and went and did some traveling in Europe, so travel is a really big one. My husband is a very outdoorsy-type guy, and he’s gotten me into being more of an outdoorsy person. Sports, as well. I like playing squash. And rock-climbing.
What do you want to do in the future?
Theatre production. I paint and I make clothing, so I thought taking that into theatre would be a good thing for me. I’ve applied for college. I’ve been accepted. I’m just kind of waiting for the funds to come in so I can go in the fall. Because my executive assistant position will shortly be over.
