Style Profile: Jovanka Vuckovic, Editor-in-Chief of Rue Morgue Magazine

Occupation: Editor-in-chief of Rue Morgue, a magazine about horror in culture and entertainment.
My style: Rock slut chic.
Style influences: I don’t pay attention to what other people are wearing. I spend a lot of time in L.A., so maybe the bandanas hanging off of me, and the leopard prints, and the huge hooker shoes are a little bit more prevalent over there, but I don’t really (get my style influences) from music or movies or anything like that.
Hair: I used to dye it all red, and when I was bleaching my roots, this kind of happy accident happened. It kind of went yellow, orange, and then red. I decided to keep it, because it looks like flames. It really is indicative of my personality. People seem to like it a lot. It’s now become a trademark of mine.
Top: The reason why I bought it was because it was super low-cut, and I like the little ruffled cap sleeves on it. I would never wear something like a really flashy top with a skirt that’s pink leopard. You’ve got to kind of balance it out a bit, otherwise you just end up looking like a clown, and you look overdressed.
Skirt: I bought it in Montreal. It was hand-made. I bought it in one of those gothic shops on Mont-Royal. It’s a local designer who makes them. I just thought it was cool, because I could wear it and not be wearing the same skirt that everybody else in Toronto was wearing.
Belt: Oh, the “slut” belt. This one I haven’t worn in a long time, actually. I have another one that says “zombies”, and another one that says “cunt”. Some days, if I’m feeling sassy, I’ll wear the “slut” belt.
Shoes: I bought them on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles in a stripper store, because I love stripper shoes. I just like big platforms with giant heels on them. It’s a power thing.
Tattoos: Most of my tattoos are inspired by movies. My entire left arm is a tattoo sleeve from the film Blade Runner. The rest of them are from horror movies. Horror icons. It’s a whole collection of things that I like.

Favourite colours to wear: Pink is something I’ve only been wearing in the last year or so. Before that, it was all black all the time, because I run a horror magazine and it’s just sort of like a habit to wear black all the time. Now, I wear all kinds of colours. I’ll wear electric blue, I’ll wear yellow, I’ll wear red, I’ll wear pinks, but I only wear (colours) on the bottom, because anything up top will clash with my hair.
Interests: Horror movies, comic books, motorcycles, tattoos, tattooing, art, music. Mostly, I’m a big, huge cinephile. I’m a film fanatic. Also, I’m a writer and an editor, so I spend most of my time writing about those very same movies, and comic books, and musicians that I love.
How I got interested in horror: I didn’t have a choice. I was born this way. My brothers weren’t really into it. My mother said, ever since she can remember, “Jovanka always liked monsters and scary movies,” so I think it was just something I was born into. Also, it’s fun. People like to be scared. Monsters are fun.
Favourite music: Anywhere from jam bands to death metal to southern rock. I like all kinds of stuff. But obviously, anything that’s horror-inspired hits me the hardest at home. Anyone who’s singing about horror, I tend to gravitate towards.
Favourite TV shows: Dexter, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, Deadwood, the old Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Doctor Who.
Favourite movies: Blade Runner, The Thing, Mad Max, The Road Warrior, Day of the Dead, Creepshow, Session 9. I could go on and on. I have a huge list on my myspace page of probably 200 of my favourite films.
Favourite Authors: Richard Matheson, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, etc.
Things I collect: Original movie posters, comic books, the first edition hardcovers of all the books that I love, toys and sculpted figures, DVDs, 8 x 10 photos from movies, horror-inspired original art, and most obviously, I’m a collector of tattoos.
Favourite food: Thai, french fries, sushi.
In the future: I definitely want to make horror films someday. (My biggest goals are) to write and direct horror films.
Final words: The more tattoos I get, the less glamorous and the less exotic my clothing gets. I’m getting to the point where I’m going to be so covered in tattoos that I’m not going to need to be wearing clothes anymore.
